Have you ever got some really slick virus or spyware that managed to disable your windows restore function .
Everytime my computer starts running funky I just restore it to a point when it was running smooth, but if that function has been disabled, I am forced to format and reinstall the op system and all the software.
Can anyone recommend a good quality back up to CD or DVD program,so if I have some prob with my computer and the restore function is no longer working,I can just pull out my CD or DVD with my computers contents stored on there ,and restore it from that.

if you have XP you can do a system back up with it's program as easy as any other...... here is a link that explains how

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx

also remember if you do get a virus you need to turn off system restore after you clean it and before you reboot so that your restore version doesn't reinfect your pc when you reboot or restore to last known good...... just remember to turn it back on once you have rebooted and you know it's clean

To me Acronis True Image is the best home/office imaging software out there but is not free,.

I have heard good things about PING which is free but is a Live CD which means you burn it to CD then boot from that to use the program.; you can grab it here

PING

side note: to me Window's System Restore is almost useless, one of the first things I disable. I am sure some people have been saved by it but...........

What is wrong with ntbackup.exe? I just had a hard drive die and had recently backed up all of my data including system state and the backup worked very well to preserve my systems condition. Hasn't taken long to recuperate.

BTW I have an external HDD for storage so I can save all of my system with no trouble. It has been well worth the investment.

Never tried ntbackup.exe, wonder if you can format your OS drive then use it to restore windows without reinstalling? If not then it is different than imaging software.

Theoretically using the external HDD I have you should be able to. However I did not trust that so I did a full back up including system state, which is the OS, and then reinstalled the OS and overwrote it with the system state. That put my computer system right back like it was before the HD crashed. My HDD comes with a bootable rescue disc so you can restore your system with out reinstalling the OS. But if you do that you have to use their back up software. I wanted to use ntbackup.exe which has the drawback of needing the OS in order to function. It was a bit of a pain but not that big of a deal. And considering that I have never done that before it could not be too hard. More time consuming that anything else. I had to tweak it a little to get things just right but once again that was not a big deal. All in all I am very pleased with the way ntbackup.exe functioned.

The thing is with software like Acronis there is no need to install the OS then do the backup thing. For me it works everytime, takes about 14 mins for XP and 24 for Vista.

hey ken - i had that very thing happen to me last wk. i can't promise what i did will work for you, as i don't know what virus you had/have.

i emptied out all my "shared folder" contents.
got me a quick list of all DOS commands and did a bit of searching around with those. i don't know if i accomplished anything but when i emptied out the "shared" stuff, i was able to restore again.

the really "cool" part (sarcastic there) is that i'm paying $6/month for anti-virus / firewall, etc. and it's all supposed to be UP TO DATE. yeah.

go to "start", then "run" then type msconfig and DISABLE all crap (i think there's a box you can check that says "basic startup" which has only essential items Windows needs to run - check that one). THEN, RESTART computer and before it gets to the welcome screen quickly push F8 and choose SAFE MODE to ensure you're only loading the essentials. then check the "shared folders" thing (go to "my computer" and it should accompany your "my documents" in the list/icons)

i recommend though, when you DO get it restored, download AVG free anti-virus from CNET. that is, provided, you have your own firewall. ;)

To the OP, I always DISABLE (first thing) the restore function Windows has graced me with

To me it offers NOTHING, period .

Thing is IF you get a virus and a restore point activates anytime you do a restore (depending on how far you go back) you have that virus again. Learn to back up, use imaging software...better yet learn not get get viruses (virlii?)
