Dead Pixels

In the last 2 years, I purchased 4 LCD monitors. Actually, I purchased 10, but the others had to be returned/exchanged because of defective screens. Of the millions of pixels that light up a screen, some pixels stop working during the life of the monitor... these are called 'dead pixels'
Many manufacturers have a minimum before they honor any warrantee complaints. I'm told (for one manufacturer) it's 6 within 1/4" before they will accept a claim. Regardless of manufacturer or cost, all my monitors have at least 1 dead pixel and they usually appear within 3-4 weeks of service. After that break-in period, what you see is what you get.
Sending a monitor back for service is costly and time consuming... most people will live with a few dead pixels on a screen instead of 4-5 weeks without it.
So... I suggest you begin using any new LCD monitor soon after purchase and leave your computer on. Don't use a 'screen saver' instead, keep the screen as bright as possible. Allow it to burn-in. The manufacturer does this, but for short periods to test it's operation. They need to ship products so rigorous testing is a thing of the past.
You want the screen to develop heat... this is normal and any defective screen will fail quickly. If it passes, you'll probably end up with a good screen. If it fails, you have a good chance of returning it to the store (within 30 days) for exchange.

hahaha

Thats terrible advice!!

Thats like telling someone to buy a new car and leave it running all the time. If it survives the first month, it will be a great car. wtf?

What kind of monitors are you buying? I have never had a problem with dead pixels (with the exception of two or three on my psp screen). I would think the problem could be in the monitors you are buying. Try a dell.

Show me where you found this to be terrible advice.
I heard it from a factory technician.
A different technician told me 'factory refurbished' units go through more testing than new units and in many cases they are specification perfect before leaving the factory.

It's reported LCD's have a lifespan over 30,000 hours. Some manufacturers claim as high as 80,000 hours.

They are electrical and NOT mechanical... two completely different things. Making a statement like that, well, let's say... you need to come back with a viable analogy.

hahahaha... you're aware of this difference, aren't you?

According to a technician at ViewSonic... New display units are only tested to verify they are working. They are designed to operate continuously for many years, but they don't go through an extensive burn-in processes like CRT displays did a generation ago.

To date, I own:

1 ViewSonic 21" widescreen,
2 Acer 22" widescreen,
1 Acer 20" widescreen.

There must have been a bad batch of Acer 21" monitors last year, I returned a few that developed discoloration within the first week of use.
I tried some off brand that had beautiful colors and clarity... they too developed a few dead pixels in the first few days of operation.

...I have never had a problem with dead pixels (with the exception of two or three on my psp screen)...

Never is the wrong word here.

Maybe Dell has a higher quality product. I cannot dispute this, however, they're often twice the price of other monitors in head-to-head comparisons. That doesn't mean they're exempt from developing dead pixels.

OMG, I absolutely LOVE my 19" Acer LCD (AL1916). Anyone who has ever seen it is amazed at the quality and clarity...and I have it turned on sometimes for days at a time (lol, I've been hunting down any dead pixels but can't find any...every time I think I find one, it's just dirt )

Oh...my monitor may have been a "factory refurbished" one. But it was CHEAP ($129), which helped in my decision -- no regrets at all. (My new Acer laptop is a whole other story, tho ~groan~ The graphics capability doesn't match my old HP laptop )

lj450, why are you so short for words? You completely avoided my comment.

Actually, I don't expect you to reply with anything factual. It's obvious to see where you're coming from...

Right... that would make it about 15 years ago, certainly too long for any relevance in this discussion.

If you do, than you're indeed lucky. Many people get much less than they pay for.

I've linked the >> DELL FORUM << it seems they have some customers with dead pixel issues.

HERE ARE SOME EXCERPTS:

(User)

"Recently, I have bought a DELL SE198WFP last monday 25th Jun 07. It was delivered on 29th Jun 07 and on the very night when I installed the LCD, I found one very irritating dead pixel on the middle of the screen. As I will be doing lots of graphics word and gaming on this LCD, this pixel caused many troubles for me.

I understand that dell had some dead pixel policy and i called the customer service line and they refuse to replace for me as they said that it is only one pixel dead.

Since it is within 30 days from the date of invoice (DELL total satisfaction policy), is it possible for me to get a replacement monitor?

Somemore, I would expect a monitor with no dead pixels and other defects since I spent so much on it?"

(Dell representative)

"A display with 1 to 5 Dead or Stuck pixels is within the industry standards, and is therefore considered an acceptable display.

* 1 to 5 Dead or Stuck pixels spread out are within current standards and do NOT warrant a replacement
* 6 or more Dead or Stuck pixels anywhere warrants a replacement monitor
* 2 adjacent Dead or Stuck pixels warrants a replacement monitor with manager approval
* 1 Dead or Stuck pixel directly in the center warrants a replacement monitor with manager approval

You may return any Dell product, no questions asked, within 30 days from the invoice date. After that, you can only do a like for like exchange."

----------------------------

THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD WAS TO ALERT PEOPLE WITH NEW LCD'S, THAT DEAD PIXELS USUALLY HAPPEN WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF PUTTING A MONITOR INTO SERVICE... DEPENDING ON THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTEE OR ANY EXTENDED SERVICE PLANS... AFTER THE 30 DAYS, IT BECOMES MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO EXCHANGE A MONITOR.

IF A MONITOR HAS A HIDDEN DEFECT IT WILL OFTEN APPEAR ON THE BREAK-IN PROCESS... KNOWING THIS, IT WOULD BEHOOVE YOU TO BREAK-IT IN WITHIN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS, ALLOWING TIME TO DEAL WITH RETURNS/EXCHANGES INSIDE THE 30 DAY LIMIT.

I bought a new viewsonic about a year ago. It had and still has one dead pixel on the center left. I just live with it because it is not that distracting or troublesome. It was like that out of the box. If it was more than that I would have had to exchange it through the purchaser.

Well, I am no screen genius by any stretch of the imagination, but I presume a dead pixel is that bright little spot that shines I think orange or red, but it may actually be more clear.

With that, I have a ViewSonic 19" that has about half a dozen that cluster closely together from time to time. I gently push in the screen to the side of these with my thumb in various spots and they disapear for weeks or months at a time.

I have a larger Dell, but it has never had any issues.
