Lost internet connection on Xircom Ethernet! |

I'm using Windows sp2 and recently had firewall problems, had to reinstall software several times and update, I lost some program folders and registry folders. I got most of the stuff stabilized, but now I have network problems.
My intenet connection is cable broadband with an external modem. I have a Dell laptop with a Xircom Realport Ethernet 10/100+modem 56 REM56G-100 .
Windows lists the hardware in the >control panel > system > hardware , and says that it is functioning, but looking in the IP tab of said folder there is no address. Also recognizes the network that I had previously setup for internet connections (which is now nowhere to be found in the Network Connections).
The external modems light blinks and "sees" the computer (verified by the cable internet company), but when using the ehthernet connection I get the Internet Explorer window that says "connection not found" then the do a network diagnostic (tool that worked ok the first couple of tries but now say something about being stopped short), and it said connection not found.
The TM Internet Security says that I have a connection.
The external cable modem works ok on its USB port plug and all works through the USB, but somewhere I lost the functionality of the Xircom card. I tried going to the website and reinstalling the drivers to no avail.
Any suggestions? I put this question here also as I had the Diagnose Network Problems working, now doesn't.

Have you tried the Dell support forums? if you haven't,you really need to.
Are you using a wireless card within the laptop and a wireless router?

no, I haven't tried the forums, only the updater and driver troubleshooter. I had some problems with the troubleshooter. Not sure it even worked at all.
And, no, I have a direct ethernet line to the cable modem. So, I'm thinking a folder I needed for the card got deleted or maybe even that the connection pins are loose. I'll see if I can get some dialetic grease and try again.

I tried several times to establish a new network connection, I tried to establish a new internet connection. I'll try to uninstall the old network connection (not sure if I did that yet), then try to reinstall and see what happens. I though it a little strange that it would show up under the hardware profile and not in the network connections though.

I understood it to mean: uninstall and reinstall the Ethernet device.

yea!!!
that was it!
It had several standings in the device manager. I uninstalled all of them, then ran find new hardware (as I was running virus scan at the time and didn't want to reboot yet), and vioala! there they were it reinstalled them with no problems. I'm using that connection right now. If it stands up to reboot and the system crashes I've had the last couple of days, I'll be pleased!
Thanks everyone!
