I want to replace my old computer monitor which is just the basic monitor that came with the computer. I think a 22 inch monitor sounds like a good size.
In searching for monitors I am discovering that widescreen monitors are in high supply but there are seemingly few of the square shaped monitors available. I really don't like the widescreen monitors, although I've never used one, so I don't know why I don't like them. It looks like they have less height and the wider length makes it seem as if it would be more difficult to view the entire screen when on the Internet, if that makes sense. Also, I don't know what the wider screen would do to my word documents, photos, etc.
I did a search on this topic and couldn't find a thread that answered my questions. I sure would appreciate any feedback about brands, resolution, widescreen vs the other style screen, size, and anything else that would be helpful. I am not at all knowledgeable on this topic so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

There are many places to look but you can try www.newegg.com. They have a good selection for you to see there.
Start with this page here. There are a few that are not wide screen.

I buy many computer electronics from mwave and tigerdirect if forced to.
The wise screens are great if one will use the monitor for wide screen DVD's. For general compiyer work (I am on the puter a bunch) I prefer the regular aspect screens. For forensic work, I prefer the wide screen because of the way the software displays on the screen.

Thanks Gman. I think I'm going to have a hard time finding something that is not widescreen, though I did see a few in the 19" and below range on the website seal mentioned. I was hoping to find a 22" screen so I'll check out the sites you suggested too.

Jankia, was it a widescreen or the more traditional shaped screen? I'm hoping to find a monitor with the more square looking screen.

Thanks Jankia...I'm not looking for CRT. I am looking for the LCD but just not a widescreen. It seems like most of the LCD's over 19" are widescreen nowadays.

Found 19's, 20's and 22's inside of 60 seconds of searching on Mwave...
Hint: Try the Viewsonic label.

Dixie, Some widescreen monitors have the same height as the 'square' ones, so you're not loosing anything. They can display 2 pages when you are working on a word processor. What's equally important is your video card. If you have a good video card it will be able to make the correct aspect should you choose a widescreen. At least have a salesperson show you some monitors with the correct setup. Many of the monitors on display are all connected to one source and usually it's 1024 x 768.
A low resolution card only designed for older 'square' aspect ratio is something like this: 800 x 600 = 1.3333 1024 x 768 = 1.3333
1024 x 768 on a widscreen gets stretched to fit the screen and perfect circles will look like ovals... this is no different than people spending $4,000 on an LCD widescreen TV and watching regular shows... everyone looks fatter simply because the image is stretched.
Some widescreen monitors are 1.6 ratio. That is 1440 x 900, 1680 x 1050 A good video will support the correct mode for your monitor.
I suggest you buy locally. If the monitor is defective within the first 30 days, you can easily return it to the store.

I got myself a nice 22" Samsung LCD for Boxing Day from Future Shop, $229. I had recently seen a 19" one Tigerdirect for $139. Usually there's not a dead pixel problem but, if you want the peace of mind, then local is the way to go. Usually, on the 17" that I was using, I'd need to adjust the left/right on certain web pages. Many seem to be made for a widescreen or aat least a higher resolution than 800x600.

Dixie...I don't know if you have bought one yet, but I have a 24" HP. I love it. It would be considered a wide screen and I don't think I have lost anything. I use to have a 17" Viewsonic and that was a good brand also. I can do everything on the new one that I could do on the old one.

Thanks so much everyone for all the advice and information you gave me. It was very helpful in guiding me in my search and letting me know some of the things to look for.
In the end, with me not knowing much about monitors, I decided to purchase from a local business. I wasn't able to find a 22" monitor with the more square design so decided to get a 22" widescreen.
After looking at many, many monitors and comparing desired features and price I chose an Acer. this particular one has great depth of color and contrast. Adjustable brightness that has the capability of going very bright. Text is easily readable coming through clear and crisp, although I do keep my text size on the larger side. It had no dead pixels. When I got it home and connected it looked equally as good as it did in the store.
Also, a couple of the features I wanted was in this monitor . I wanted one that has a very narrow frame and one that sits low to the desk. This one has both those features.
The one thing that others who like higher sitting monitors might take into account is that this one does not adjust in height although the screen does tilt adjust.
Thanks again to everyone who gave me all the great advice. Maybe next time around I'll be looking at those 24" monitors like happygrlok has.
Here is the monitor I ended up with.

Your welcome Dixie,I checked on your link and was astonished that you paid over a $100 more then Brenda did at Staples for her Acer 22in. After checking into what she paid I found out I gave you the wrong info. Hers is a 17 in.

Thanks Jankia....I tried to compare availability and price before buying. I was hoping not to miss a better deal but you never know.
Since there is a Staples conveniently located in my area I checked out their in-store selection of the 22" monitors before making my purchase and that particular model was a bit more at Staples than it was at Circuit City at the time.

Dixie, I have a viewsonic 19" and really like it, I also have a 22" wide screen but the 19" is much better for just normal PC work or net surfing. Good luck in your search.

well if you want LCD choose one with a fast MS response time the lower the # the better. as for widescreen if you do not want one better hurry and get a 4:3 none wide ASAP cause there fazing them out. personally I like samsung but there kinda $$$. the problem with looking for answers is everything keeps changing. even the tech geeks can't keep up with it anymore.
