Firefox and msn messenger? |

I use msn messenger for all IM on my PC.
Everytime I log into messenger and retrieve my mail, it automatically opens the IE browser.
I know I could access my hotmail from Firefox directly, but it's easier to click my icon in messenger.
How do I set my messenger to open in Firefox, rather than IE?
Thank you

In Firefox:
Tools -> Options -> Main Tab
Click the "Check Now" button to make sure that Firefox is the default browser.
If it isn't, set it to the default browser.
To prevent a future version of Exploder from setting itself as the default, check the box to have Firefox always check.

Yeah that just sets the browser as default, easily done. But when I use my IM there is no browser used so I am not sure you can, how, or would even want to open your IM in a browser. In fact I am pretty sure it is not necessary. Maybe someone else knows more about this than I do though.

Mischief484 is correct. The messenger does not use a browser, but if your default email program is set to one of the portals that does require a browser (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.), the messenger will start an instance (or a new tab) of the browser in order to enable viewing of the email.
Often, Microsoft does not honor the notion of a "default browser" or a "default email service"; however they did both this time.
Perhaps the messenger was written by another company!!

Did you not follow Mischief484's advice? It was correct and will yield the results you are seeking.

My default browser is set to Firefox on my PC.
BUT it always defaults to IE from msn messenger.
If I remove IE from my PC, and with my PC browser default in Firefox, it still tries to start IE, but then it can't find it.
I can always open Firefox, go to hotmail and get my email from there. I want to directly access it from my messenger though. I can't seem to be able to do that.

Also, if I go into IE and click 'Tools' 'Options' 'Programs'
It says ~
'IE is not currently the default web browser' - yet it still keeps going there instead of Firefox - Just from msn messenger, no other programs.

Okay, I screwed up -- sort of.
Many people still use the term MSN Messenger when they are referring to its replacement from Microsoft, Windows Messenger. Apparently you are using an actual version of MSN Messenger.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, Microsoft has a terrible track record of not recognizing competitive product from other vendors and thus "hard codes" browser name, email programs, etc. I suspect this is the case here.
I did my testing with Windows Messenger and it behaves in the manner you desire. You might try downloading it unless you have a compulsive reason not to do so.
This is Microsoft's download site address for the downloading of Windows Live Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger, like most Micro$oft products, tends to be bloated and requires more RAM and computing power than competing programs. Adding RAM is usually the cheapest and easiest method to increase performance of Windows application programs.

I gave up on MSN years ago. Pain in the butt, it was! I use Yahoo or Gmail and both can be accessed from my email and while on Firefox.
