i'm a total ..."total" beginner at linux, i know enough to get in the door and then get myself lost from there on in.

you can boot to linux in many different ways

you can download an ISO, use cd burning software to burn the ISO image and then use that newly burned cd to (a) boot the the CD and run linux from the CD or (b) boot to the CD and install linux on your hard drive

you can install a virtual machine on your computer and then use then use that virtual machine to load Linux right from within your Windows OS

are you famliar with puppy linux? it's awesome! with puppy linux, you can basically run it from a flash drive (as you mentioned below). basically you'll still have to d/l and burn the ISO and boot to the CD. once you boot to the CD - you can then install puppy linux to the flash drive and make the drive bootable (if your bios supports that).

i have puppy linux on a 1gb flash stick as bootable. i also have another stick with qemu and puppy - so that i can run linux from within windows (qemu is a free virtual environment software that once installed, you can then run linux within that virtual environment).

if you need any assistance with the above, i have articles from various linux mags....

i'm just now starting to study for my linux+. i have an older system and the next step is to install suse linux on it -

only thing that sucks for a live cd boot is alot of the pluggins wont work on many many sites, like itunes, photobucket, youtube and thigs that require adobe or acrobat and help with that??

i haven't messed with linux too much but i will ask this, is the fact that the plugins not working - is that because of using the boot CD or maybe you don't have the plugins installed (if they're avail for linux)?

I use ubuntu live CD and would like to setup for dual boot. Has anyone here on MD accomplished or setup their system up this way?

I have two 40 gig drives with one solely for purpose of DVR setup.
I am still resolving issues with newly acquired 8 channel dvr card and may need addtional drive for linux environment implementation.
Or, I could setup a separate box for dvr use.

Ideally, i would like c, c++, java, ... environment, and then ramp-up my c# and .net skills.

Any thoughts from you linux experts?

I have played around a little with Redhat Fedora, but I set it up on my secondary computer. Unfortunately, I can't offer any help.

You can use Linux and Windows together....just not at the same time.

Use this installer for Ubuntu-Linux....wubi-installer

Ubuntu-Linux website....Ubuntu-Linux web site

The wubi installer needs to be installed first. Then download Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu to the wubi folder it then found it and installed. I had error problems when downloading with the wubi installer. All instructions for installing is on the "Wubi" web site.

Once installed on boot-up a page comes up with windows as default and Ubuntu as a second option. It will automatically boot into windows without you doing anything. To use Linux-Ubuntu you must move the arrow key down and it will then boot into Linux!

The wubi installer is about 1.5 MB but, that Ubuntu-Linux download is 600MB. Unless you have high speed internet service or a friend that has it.........don't do it on dial-up as it will take you 3 months, 3 weeks, 9 days and 42 minutes to get it done....just joking.

I like Linux-Ubuntu and I am using it right now! Been using it for about a month. It is solid and the best part....IT IS FREE

Philippe,

I used Partition Magic to partition my hard drive and then loaded fedora. I,l however, never use it because iTunes doesn't work in Linux,so I'm always in Windoes. When I get a dedicated computer for mh iTunes (with wonderful speakers, of course), then I'll use the Linux. I suppose. I don't have problems with Windows XP, but I'm just an average user. I only wanted Linux to play around with it to learn it for work, to get used to the VolumeManger, but haven't done it yet.

As far as I know, you can boot other Linux's other than the Puppy Linux which sirdidymus mentioned from a flash drive; you can even boot Solaris on x86 architecture from a flash drive.

Anyway, Philippe, if you want a C,C++ environment, you don't even have to go through loading Linux. Just download Cywgwin and you can treat your Windows Desktop just like a UNIX environment and will also get the gcc compiler. You'll get Java, of course, too, but you can also download the free version for Windows from Sun's site.

I have played with Linux in the late 90s (used it to run a few bots when on IRC) and recently live CDs to check different distros.

If you want to free up space for ubuntu for dual booting, you can boot into the live CD and run gparted. It can resize your windows partition and then you can install Ubuntu on the free space. Also Ubuntu 8.04 allows you to install inside of Windows using Wubi. Downside to Wubi is that is a tad slower than native ubuntu. I'd recommend running Defrag in Windows before resizing your partition.
