Suddenly Firefox has developed problems I cannot remedy.
I cannot right click and save things. it appears to operate normally, but no files are saved and no records appear in the download box.
The error console is filling up with messages for every page I visit (or action) by warnings or errors. When I go to see what actually happened, there are usually problems with lines of code dealing with script, src, javascript.
I've cleared cache, cookies, defragged the registry, uninstalled and re-installed Firefox (several times with different sequences) and it still has the same problems.
Anyone have some trouble shooting tips?
I haven't deleted my Firefox directory and started with a clean installation... they are always overlays to the previous existing directory. I'd like to save my bookmark file before deleting the directories and starting fresh.

So far... no luck.
I cannot find the downloads.rdf file and yes, my 'hidden files' are visible.

I have had a compatibility issue with firefox and my universities web site a few times before. The only way I could fix it was to uninstall and then reinstall. That solved my problem until the next time some unforeseen gremlin attacked my browser and got it acting up again.

Thanks nah, that didn't work either.
I've saved my bookmark file. My plan is to uninstall Firefox, delete all the folders clear it from the registry and install a fresh version.... but not tonight.

I uninstalled it, deleted the folders, cleaned the registry. reinstalled it and the same problem occours.
I downloaded Opera today. It's not my first choice.
I need to figure out how to fix Firefox...

I am using Java Standard Edition 6, Update 5 ((build 1.6.0_05-b13) and have successfully downloaded hundreds of files using Firefox 2.0.0.14, all five of the release 3 betas, and Firefox 3 RC1.
With all the work and rework you have done relative to Firefox, perhaps you might want to check out the Java components. There have been Java updates in the past weeks....

When I suspected a java problem, one of the first things I did was click the update java to this link from my java plug-in:
http://javadl-esd.sun.com/update/1.4.1/?version=1.4.1_02-b06
It returned: HTTP 404 Not Found. The page cannot be found

I just deleted the java 'stuff' on my computer, deleted Firefox. rebooted and reinstalled Firefox... the problem is the same.

Well, that sure sucks!!!
I use a different means: Click Start, then click Control Panel. Within the Control Panel you should find a Java button. That will open up the Java Control Panel. One of the available tabs will read Update. In the bottom right-hand corner of that page is an Update Now button.
Give that a try.

I did that. it's where the error message came from. All of it's been deleted now.

OK here's the deal with Java.. it does not delete the old versions it only installs the new one... we use to run into that issue all the time with security scans ... they would till show up as not patched when the newest was installed ...
to verify click you C drive > Program Files > Java

In addition to removing all versions of Java as per Nah's suggestion, try downloading a new version from here.
Just by looking at the link that received the 404 error, your version of Java must have been very old.

Got it... finally.
I installed a new java control panel but that wasn't the trouble.
The file downloads.rtf exists in 3 places on my computer. None of them appear with the search function. Yesterday, I had found 2 of them and they were deleted.
I opened the error console and traced it to 'another' downloads.rtf file I didn't see earlier... It was trying to access a subdirectory that didn't exist !
All is well in Mozillaland tonight... nah and capo, many thanks.

well that was very strange chatillion. Do you think it was a corrupted file extension? I mean maybe it was not recognized by the computer yet you found it so it did exist but might have been beyond recognition in normal channels. Just a guess, sounds pretty strange to me but then again it is a computer isn't it?

when i try to update my java version 6 update 7 it hangs up when it says copying new files.. i have restarted it 2 times.. anyone else had this happen..

My Java updater was not scheduled to run until early next month, so I forced it with a manual update.
It installed without any problems, but it is sloooooooow. Perhaps too much of the installer is written in Java!!
Give it another try and then head off to the store....

what store?? i tried to update with the update button on the java platform.. thing.. haha dang now it says ihave the latest version .. go figure.. Sweet N Louisiana
