Anyone know if there is a Norton Erase for Windows Vista. I found the instructions for Windows XP. Does it work the same way? I have the pre-installed test version which has now expired and I am going to install a different program now. I would like to remove all traces of Norton.

Those are good for a general removal but remember that many programs leave traces in the registry. It is advisable to edit the registry for traces of Norton and remove them as well.

"Revo Uninstaller" is by the far the best program that I have used to remove programs. It scans the registry after a program has been uninstalled and compiles a list so that you can decide whether to remove specific registry keys.
I feel obligated to remind you, however, that tinkering with the registry is one of the surest ways to screw up your operating system. If you can afford the time and have the original system restore CDs, the best way to remove Norton is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Vista. If you do not want to invest that much time reinstalling programs and specifying your settings, then the other programs already mentioned should do just fine. Good luck!

Thank you so much RQ... I will check into that program. Registry...ouch! I ain't a-gonna touch that baby, I can tell you that. What is left is left. Thank you also for the info. I will check all the tips out before doing anything. This is a new computer and the trial period for Norton ran out. I had no choice as it came with the computer. Such is life...

This is a new computer and the trial period for Norton ran out. That's how they get a lot of their business. People don't want to deal with software that's difficult to uninstall. So, they would rather pay.

"Revo Uninstaller" is by the far the best program that I have used to remove programs. It scans the registry after a program has been uninstalled and compiles a list so that you can decide whether to remove specific registry keys. Now that sounds like a good program, as long as it covers the bases. Just what most people need so they don't have to go digging around in their registry in the first place.
BTW Yahoo messenger is a bear to uninstall and it leaves about 50 or so traces in the registry. My wife loves it, I hate it because it is a resource hog among other things. It took me an hour to get all of it out of my computer because of hidden registry components.
So try RQ's program. If it works it would be a lot easier than manually cleaning up behind a program that is designed to be a pain in the butt.

Thanks Sealacamp. I will go with RQ's suggestion and use the Revo. Also, thanks for the info on Yahoo. You just never know what stays on your computer when you think you have it all off. Worst part is, lots of times the program is made that way so you cannot remove all traces.

Exactly GJay! Like someone somewhere wants to keep tabs on us or at least on our wallets, shopping habits, browsing habits, or more. At the very least they would like for us to keep using their invasive program. Glad to be of service.

I don't think Windows is smart enough to come out unscathed after a resource intensive program like Norton anti virus has been installed and then uninstalled.
It is a shame that windows is so fragile, but the simple act of removing Norton antivirus can remove files that the program and windows think is part of Norton but maybe needed by other programs to run correctly and as you said, sometimes the programs are designed to make life difficult if you decide to remove them.
The best chance of a solid config would be format the drive, reinstall Vista, install only drivers and programs you want and use Norton ghost to create a ghost restore back up image, so in the future if you ever have a stability problem you just save the new data from your programs and restore the computer back to when it was solid and stable.
The only way I have found to install and then uninstall a program without damaging windows is to install a program like Norton clean sweep. It monitors the installation of a new program so it knows just exactly what to remove if and when you decide to remove it.
Good luck.

Yeah I just bought a new Acer Laptop with Vista and a 60 day free trail period of Norton anti Virus. I'm going to call Acer and get the Windows disk and drivers that for some reason were not in the box, then format and reinstall and Ghost it

Don't be surprised if the Norton trial is part of the re-install. I cleaned an HP laptop this weekend. There were 3 disks. System, drivers and trial software.

A registry program that automates the process and can determine valid verses corrupted registries would be great, because most of us don't know enough about manual registry changes to keep from messing something up.

ok here, one must know the difference between a factory restore CD and an actual operating system (OS) CD....
when you buy a pc or laptop these days you do not get just an actual OS CD usually... yes the CD has the OS on it but it also has all of your drivers and trail software and etc specific to that machine... hence you have a factory CD not an OS CD... therefore when you rebuild and reinstall from the factory CD you are putting your pc or laptop back to how it was when you 1st bought it...
And sorry Ken but if you know what you are actually doing you can clean a new machine of all the garbage and not have to completely rebuild it..... but everyone does things their own way or the way the know how... one must remember there are a lot of ways to do many things and sometimes one persons swear by way is not always the best way.......

I am quite aware of this but I got Zero cd's with my laptop. I will try to call Acer and see if they will give me a clean version of Vista since I essentually paid for it when I got the laptop and also all the drivers. If they refuse I may have to buy a new copy of Vista and extract the drivers off the a factory install disk,if that is all they choose to send me.

I wouldn't consider a format, fresh install of Op system, drivers and programs a complete rebuild. I cant say I am very familiar with registry fix programs, but I have talked to some good tech people that deal with computers everyday and most will say the best way to get a rock solid machine is not to subtract from a questionable install with a bunch of trial ware, but to start from a clean install, then you know exactly what is in it, then backup at that a solid point. If you ever have a problem in the future you have a good solid config to restore to. But use a good restore program because windows restore sucks, most viruses have figured out how to disable the windows restore function.
