In case you have not installed Security pack three for Windows XP yet, it can really fork your computer up. I can't get into my PC and am using my laptop to get online. The computer keeps turning itself off before it ever gets opened up. Cycling on and off. Once I turned it off to update the new SP3 download, I never was able to get back into it. Just so you know.

Uh did you mean service pack 3?
Well after following nah's link it would appear that you are talking about service pack 3. I have had no problems with it and I have installed that upgrade to 4 computers now, one of which has an AMD Athlon dual core processor in it. If you follow nah's link there is a link to a microsoft fix for your issue. Good luck!

SE try to boot in Safe Mode... if you don't know how (keep hitting F8 after you turn it on...then it will ask normal safe mode or some other crap(sorry can't remember the exact wording))
The go to Start> click Settings > Control Panel> click Add and remove programs> click show all updates (think it says) > Click on the Windows SP3 > uninstall it ... close the windows and reboot the machine ...
OR another way to do the same thing: After safe mode.... click Start > click Run >type in the box appwiz.cpl > click remove or update > Click Windows SP3 and uninstall .........

I try to avoid installing service packs. They feel like viruses to me. i went several years with Windoze 98se without installing a pack. I had to upgrade to win2000 cos my printer wanted it. But it also said I needed SP3. It works fine without it... who'd a thunk it?

service packs and updates are to generally patch security holes in the software.. in general they are a good thing.. but sometimes it's better to wait until the bugs have been worked out in a new SP than to jump in with both feet if you are not real tech savvy... reason it can bite you... but all in all i'd rather have some one that updates and uses them than someone that has little knowledge and lets their machine become a problem for others they communicate with or for the rest of the net in general...

Well, bad news. I am so forked. They did everything, deleted SP3 and did twaeks here and there and it just would not repair. They did a recovery. Argh. Anyway, I at least did a back up right before I loaded the SP3. Thank God. Now if I can get it to reload all my info, I will be cool.

sounds to me like an old DOS boot virus...
betting the service pack has nothing to do with it as...
Once I turned it off to update the new SP3 download, I never was able to get back into it. are you one of these people who keep your computer running 24/7??

ounds to me like an old DOS boot virus...
betting the service pack has nothing to do with it as... I would agree since I have installed it to 4 boxes to date, one with an AMD, and had no problems at all.
Protection is a must especially if the computer is running all the time and connected to the net.

This is a known issue with OEM pc's that had XP loaded with an Intel base image with a AMD processor that was modified incorrectly.... not all AMD’s will have this issue only the above mention type of AMD imaged incorrectly by the OEM.. also it can be a BIOS error where the BIOS has not been upgraded on say a 5 yr or older platform pc.... or it can be due to a pc not being fully ACPI compliant... it depends on what the pc is doing, is it looping causing reboot only or are you getting a system error.. if so where are you getting the error and what is it and etc.....
a similar issue happen with XP SP2 on AMD pc's using Intel CPU based Sysprep'ed images....
also depending on the tech some will always take the easy fast way to fix an issue without taking the time to try several different approaches 1st... not good IMO but hey each tech does his own thing and it depends on $$$ and the company sometimes... sad to say but true.....
another thing to remember is 1 fix or SP or troubleshooting technique that works on 1 or 20 pc’s will not always work on all of them… so you can not always go by what happen on the last pc but it can be a good place to start troubleshooting if the issue appears the same.

Well based on that I guess I didn't have a problem with the AMD processor computer because I built it myself and there was no intel image on an AMD chip. At least that is what I think you said nah.

Did you use witchcraft to gain all this PC knowledge?

(Gives Kenn a spiritual kick)
Nah, it would loop endlessly. Never opened entirely. Yeah, the guy did not seem to want to do a whole lot on it and never heard of the problem before. I most likely would have been better off hiring a geek to come to my house. They are so expensive tho. Anyway, I am still have funny stuff going on like a fuzzy picture. I may just buy a new computer and try to get my backup loaded to it. He ended up loading the wrong backup.

why do you ask Ken?
Sorry SE sounds like you got a hold of a less than knowledgeable tech or maybe just a wanta be tech... there are a lot of those around sorry to say.....
It sometimes is not a 1 or 2 try to get in and fix an issue as such and sad but most don't know how and they do not care to learn how to fix a pc and make it easier on the user or to keep the users data.... i've run into that many times and it is frustrating to say the least for everyone involved!!!

Aw, he is a budding energy worker (Kenn) and hungry for knowledge, Nah! Yeah, I got the tech was not totally cognizant and I was already screwed by the time I got back there. Not much I could do to make a difference.
Of course, I did not truly set it up right either. I wrongly assumed that he would look it up and consult with others before messing with it since he never heard of the problem. My mistake. Won't happen again. I ever have any puter issues again, I will give a detailed description of what I want done and NOT done and have it written down for them to refer to. Live and learn.
