USB memory sticks, flash drives, thumb drives...

These things seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper every month.

I went into TigerDirect and they had barrels of them at unheard of prices.
Every time I go there, I seem to buy another. 4 gig drives are down to $26.

For the most part, they are 100% reliable. The only lost data (for me) was a few years ago. I had a 256K SanDisk that went defective. I tried the manufacturer's utility to retrieve the data (unsuccessfully) and they replaced the stick.

The replacement unit and a 512k unit (by another maker) have been through the laundry (both washer and dryer) easily 10 times and haven't lost any data at all.

My 1 gig SanDisk has built-in software U3 that requires you eject the memory before removing it from the computer. If you pull it without properly ejecting, there is a chance of loosing data. I loaned it to someone who didn't realize you needed to do that and he arrived at a meeting with an empty memory stick.

I have some 4 gig drives by different makers that seem to work fine. The only glitch recently was trying to copy a corrupted movie file to a Centron memory stick. I didn't know the file was corrupted until I received an error message. So, I aborted the attempt and deleted the file from the stick. I added a different file and the corrupted file was still there. I ejected the memory stick and re-inserted it and the deleted file was still there !

I tried this several times and each time the deleted file was still there. WTF ??

The only way I was able to remove it was reformatting the stick. I tried the same sequence and the corrupted file could not be deleted. The stick had to be reformatted each time.

Maybe it's a quirk of that brand of memory. I didn't try it on any other memory sticks but I'm curious if anyone here has experienced loss of data from not ejecting or any other glitches encountered.

nope can't say that i've personally every had that issue...but corrupted files can leave what's called a "ghost copy" and it can become an issue trying to delete them..

also when you format make sure it shows all the sectors were good and if not that could be part of the problem...

I have several of the scandisk ones that use the U3 program. I have ejected them several times without loss of data. I have never had any problems with them (all one gig).

These things are awesome. You can damn near eliminate the need for an office network (in a small office) through the use of flash drives.

Whe I do a windows format it never gives me that info on sectors, but when you do errior checking then defragment it does.

Anyone put a sata drive in a standard Ultra Ide USB 2.0 external case ?
I found a crazy deal of $82 for a 500 gig sata 2 w/32 megs of cashe, was thinking of putting it in an external case.
If anyone wants the link to this drive let me know.

You probably could do that, Kenn...but would it really be worth it? CompUSA currently has a Western Digital 500GB SATA drive for $79.99, but for about another $20 or so you should be able to find a similar USB/Firewire drive with enclosure, cables, manuals, guarantees, and software for backup and/or synchronization.

Unless you already have the additional items, it doesn't really seem like a bargain. If you intend to assemble a SAN or NAS, those drives might make excellent choices!

Yeah your right Capo, I found a highly rated quiet Sata case at Circuit city, onsale and half off for $39.00.

That drive you are refering to at comp usa is the same drive that I'm interested in, but CompUSA wants to charge 10.00 in tax and fees, so i'll go with $82.00 shipped from my source.

I think I'm getting a better deal by buying the case and hard drive seperate and installing the drive in the case myself.
