I think when we reached around 2 giga hertz computer processor speed I remember reading ads boosting the ability to do several task at the same time on a computer.
An example, burning DVD disk while surfing.

So the other day I decided to take advantage of this capability and while downloading MP3 files, I took some of the MP3’s I already downloaded and converted them to wave in Nero.
I tried several different MP3’s and they all came out glitchy with audio dropout.
My computer is a 2.6 celeron with 256 meg ram.
I’m wondering if Nero has stability problems converting MP3 to wave or is the problem that I was downloading at the same time I was converting and my wimpy celeron with low ram can’t handle it?

Kenn....256 Megs.....is just not enough to do very many things at all! It is just barely enough to keep your OS going without running Virus software and a firewall to boot!

With just that much ram I would highly suggest you shut down un-needed programs that are running before you bring up Nero! Once you shut down un-needed programs you should be able to burn your music.

Here is a little program that will show you all process's running on your computer. There are many you can shut down....just leave all Windows and Microsoft process's alone...important.....some will shut down your machine!

Process Explorer v11.20

you can also press, on your keyboard, control, alt and delete at the same time and see the installed windows task manager. But, this is not in the same league as the program I have given you a link to.

Process Explorer when you mouse over a process, in it, will show you what it is.

OH, this is a Microsoft program and it works flawlessly in any XP or above.

Check it out!

In reality, there ARE Windows services that can be shut down. If you don't use a particular service, such as Task Scheduling, don't allow it to start.

Here is an article describing the process.

True Capo .... you can go to services and stop any service you do not use and it is best to only run what is necessary .... if you do not know what it is look it up and look for tweaks to your OS .... (makes sure you write down what you change if you make several changes ... it is best to only make 1 or 2 changes at a time if you are not really familiar with what you are doing... that way you can change things back to the way there were if you run into an issue) ... also you can always search for the process by name and there are mane process definition libraries out on the net...

also the thing most people don't realize is there are very few programs that need to be running at start-up... and just because they are not running at start up does not mean they are not available for use ....

Kenn.....I use a program to control start-ups. It is called "Winpatrol" its nickname is "Scotty"!

You can get it here...winpatrol

And you can read all about "Scotty" here....Winpatrol Homepage

This program has the ability to shutdown programs running on your computer. If you install a program and do not want it running, except when you want it to by clicking a shortcut, this program upon booting up will tell you a new program is running and ask you if it is allowed! Then either click yes or no.. The interface is like explorer. You can always go in and start a program to run at start-up and disable. It is a very easy program to use. I have used it for years.

Once you boot up and Scotty has not "woofed" alerting you to a program starting you do not want, after an install, you can right click and close Winpatrol. So you will have the resources available from Scotty closing!

Be sure to read! If you have any question please, feel free to contact me.

the run command works just fine for all kinds of things .... use msconfig for start-up items and servies.msc for services....

plus he is already using a system with limited resources ... he doesn't need any more programs that will use more resources.....

nah12....You just don't have a clue as to what you are talking about! Why didn't you go and read about the program? Or are you only concerned in "Attacking Me"? Not everyone knows about MSCONFIG, Task manager, svchost or a number of other process's and "hidden" programs that are on their computer! STOP CONFUSING THEM! Make things as simple as you can.....and as they go along they will learn more! The way you do they will crash their computer and may have to re-install their system! You are no where near giving enough information when you tell anyone to go to Microsoft's Configuration Utility. Damage can be done to their computer in that utility and until they know more about it by reading....they need to stay out of it! Most people wanting information are not Geeks. They are Novices!

You need to try and help people and stop your attacks! You appear to me as you don't give a damn, in this instance, about Kenn....only that you want to attack me! Get a life......and stop your ridiculous attacks!

*********************************************************************************************

Kenn...as I stated before use this program to shut-down the programs that are starting up. Like Nero, Photo software and other programs that run eating resources. Also most if not all of these programs are using bandwidth sending information to their respective makers!

Once Scotty does his job and you have rebooted Scotty will only be needed if you install software that starts each time you boot. Then after you are sure and Scotty has run through the system you can then right click Winpatrol and shut it down! Not only have you stopped many, many resource eating programs from running...you will have increased your bandwidth, if you are on dial-up this program is going to be a big help, and you will have stopped using your processor so much.

You do need more Ram, memory, for you computer. I would suggest at the least raising your memory to 1,024 MB's!

Not everyone posting here knows what they are doing. They claim to but, believe me after reading some of their responses...they need to go back to Geek School...their Diplomas are bogus!

I saw no attacks from Nah. She merely suggested that two simple utility programs, which are always on a Windows computer because they are part of the distribution, can be used to control those programs that start when you boot the computer and which services should be enabled or disabled.

Most people wanting information are not Geeks. They are Novices!
That's true, so why are you sending them out to Microsoft's TechNet to download Process Explorer? TechNet is, and always has been, for Geeks and Process Explorer is a Geek tool.

Windows is extremely complicated for the work that it actually performs. I would love to see Microsoft write a completely new operating system or for Linux (or any other operating system) to displace Windows. Those scenarios are not going to happen soon. In the meantime, users will have to (a), pay Geeks to make their systems perform or (b), learn tools to enable themselves to perform the work, or (c) , buy machines with excess capacity to compensate for Windows' shortcomings.

Lefty once again you attack and have not a clue what you are talking about ........ so go ahead and spew your so called IT knowledge and anyone who cares to listen can go for it and use it....

What you don't seem to understand is the IT knowledge i share is out of the goodness of my heart which i do not have to share with anyone that is not paying for them.. You see my knowledge and skills are well reimbursed in the IT field... so tell us Lefty when was the last time you got paid for your IT knowledge or skills?

But it's OK Lefty you can keep on leading people down your so called path of knowledge and skills and I’ll just sit back and have a real good chuckle... Thanks for the entertainment ….

Not at all. It's a couple of people with some knowledge trying to help Kenn. Nah and I are trying to do the same thing that you are: help the OP with his problem. I do not understand why you would consider people offering alternative solutions as "attacks".

I have helped Kenn in the past and hope to do so (if required) in the future.

It's no use Capo ... he is like some others around here... he just likes to attack and run and it doesn't matter the subject or the poster....

i've decided from here on out i'm just reporting (coping and pasting) every attack with no other response until the Mods get sick of having to read them also.....

GH...very good app.

I have another one I use called "JV 16 Power Tools". It is a very thorough cleaner of the Registry and it will also do many other functions, as well.

It is now a program that requires payment for the newer versions. I use version 1.1 on my XP. At a website called "Old Apps" dot com you can get the last freeware version. I have used this software for over 9 years. I have used it on every Windows system including '98. It is the best "I" have ever used.

Everyone else.....you will have to judge for yourself. If you need to know more about this program post it here or you can email me.

There are 4 versions showing. The 4th version is the last "freeware"...version 1.3!

One more thing...it will "repair" your Registry!

If it's mechanical, it don't need fixin' -- I've already fixed it right the first ....or maybe second time.
