HELP!

I had to purchase a new monitor today & without a lot of knowledge, made a quick decision & purchased one.

My problem now is, as noted, screen resolution. The recommendation is 1440 x 900....but on my settings, it is at 1280 x 1024 & I can't push it any higher.

I am NOT happy with the way everything appears s t r e t c h e d, yet compressed on my screen.

Is there a RESOLUTION to this resolution problem?

Thanks so much for any help!

Try 1024x768! This is the screen resolution I use and it works fine. The screen is perfect for MD!

If by chance it is still distorted it may be your new monitor is bad!

WOW~!

That definitely clears things up, but it is BIG!
Heck, I could sit across the room now & read everything on the screen!
Hopefully, I get used to this.

Thanks for the help!

What I find now with this resolution is that it is difficult to multi-task with 2 or 3 windows visible at the same time, as they are all so large & take up so much screen space. Any resolution to that?

BTW, I only purchased a 19" monitor...Didn't want to have a TV screen in front of me! Wondering if I'd gotten the 20" if that would make a difference............

You might want to visit the websites for your PC, video card and monitor manufacturers and make sure all of your software and drivers are updated .... once that is done, you'll may have a better chance of having more options for your display .... just a thought.

missliss, what brand/model did you buy?

1440 / 900 = 1.6
That's the aspect ratio.

1280 / 1024 = 1.25
Different aspect

See if you have a lower setting that gives you an aspect of 1.6
It won't take full advantage of the monitor's capability, but the objects on the screen will be in the correct proportion. For example, circles will appear like circles and not ellipses.

chat...

It's a Samsung SynchMaster 932BW

on VIA/S3GChromell Graphics

I use Windows XE....I don't see anything about aspect ration on my screen resolutions settings. And really, all of this is waaaaaaay over my head. I just know the screens are so large now I am not really happy....Oh & btw, proportion seems fine..well, not perfect, but better than it was before I set to what LHL suggested.

Here are a few links that could be helpful:

Samsung 932BW to see if there are drivers newer than the ones supplied with the monitor.

I didn't see anything regarding your Gateway video. Probably, it's part of the motherboard. Yes? I doubt it allows for higher or custom resolutions... I'd kill it and upgrade to something with more memory.
What slots are available in your computer? If it's more than 5 years old, chances are you have an AGP slot and 2 or 3 PCI slots.

If it were me, I'd disable the onboard video (or uninstall the drivers and remove the old card if it's a separate card) and install a PCI video card from Tiger Direct for $40.

The Zotac card is one of the least expensive and will support resolutions up to 2048 x 1536, so you can take full advantage of the 1440 x 900 on the Samsung.

Right... how the hell are you going to accomplish this?
Find a geek to do it for you. Going to Best Buy, Office Depot or Staples will probably cost $100 for the video card and $75 to install it. Hopefully, you can find some neighbor with a college student who can help.

Chat....Thank you, my friend.
But I must confess, as I read your post my chin was laying on the keyboard the whole time. I have no friggin CLUE about all that stuff. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just pack this darn monitor up & return it! Doggone it! The monitor I had I LOVED!

Taking this to Office Depot to have them do it is out of the question....and I do not know any neighbor or college student around here that knows any more than I do.

Is it possible that I made a poor choice with this monitor?

The monitor was a good choice... but you need to upgrade the video card to see it perform on a widescreen at maximum resolution. Otherwise it's going to stretch the smaller video into the full display.

Your computer can handle 1280 x 1024 on something like this: standard 19" monitor

If you're not ready to upgrade the video card, would you consider returning the monitor and getting a standard 19" ??

Maybe you got it on a special deal. If not, some monitors allow you to change modes and only display the video exactly as the video card sends the signal (without stretching it) This way, you will see a square picture and 1" on either side will be dark...

Did you catch that? Here's an example:

Your old screen was this proportion
....................
....................
....................
....................
....................

The new one is this proportion

...........................
...........................
...........................
...........................
...........................

So the monitor stretches the square image to fit the rectangle.

see if you can change the setting (look in the manual for this) to "video card aspect" (or something like that) and your square image will appear centered in the screen without any distortion.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! I GOT that, chat!
The monitor you linked me to looks like my fried monitor!

So I should return the wide screen & purchase a standard 19 or 20 inch whichever.

I am going to check into that tomorrow.

Honestly, as dumb as this may sound...that sounds a whole lot easier for me than dealing with all of this technical stuff that intimidates the heck out of me!

Thank you for taking your time with me & explaining it so I would understand!
