I used it for yrs, havent put it back on since my computer crashed last. The Antivirus people (PC Cillin, Norton, McAfee, etc) do not like CCleaner software. When you call your antivirus support people, they will immediately delete CCleaner and say it can cause conflicts.

I dont know that it caused problems on mine either, I just know that the antivirus people do not like to see it when you call them for support.

I install everywhere! I take it back, the last time I looked at cleaners, the general rule was to avoid them like the plague. I've just read reviews on it and there don't appear to be any traces of spyware on that particular one.

Ccleaner lets you do a registry backup, so if it does create a problem, you can restore your registry back to a working system.
Ccleaner also lets you clean up junk files, edit start up programs, and a few other things.

CCleaner (originally called "crap cleaner" because it was developed to remove all traces of unwanted programs that are loaded on new computers) is an essential tool for anyone using Windows and desiring a stable and responsive computer.
As Laidback noted, it will create a system restore point prior to deleting any registry entries. If one selects the Registry option, the first step is to check each of the categories within the registry that is to be checked (I check them all). Next, click on the Scan for Issues button. CCleaner will scan the registry and note all anomolies that it detects. At this point CCleaner has done nothing to change the registry. If the Fix selected issues... button is clicked, CCleaner provides the option to backup changes to the registry. After the optional backup, the option is presented to remove the erroneous registry entries one-by-one or en masse. If you are unsure about deleting an entry, don't do it! I run this option consecutive times until no errors are detected.
As for file cleanup, check the Windows components as well as application programs that you want it to check. Click on the Analyze button, and after a brief time, CCleaner will list all the file categories that can be deleted. Nothing is deleted until the Run Cleaner button is selected. If in doubt, don't delete.
One of the greatest factors in PC performance is the Startup list. Many programs place entries in this list when they are installed; very few need to be in this list. Use the Disable option rather than Delete to stop programs from executing every time you reboot. If you change your mind, it is easy to Enable the program once again.

Good analysis by Capo.
Another good ( and free ) program that is somewhat related and useful is Revo Uninstaller. This can detect all of the programs on your PC, and you can choose to remove/uninstall them with Revo; some programs, once installed, conveniently fail to provide an uninstall option, and the Remove Programs option in your PC's Control Panel may not do a really thorough job of program removal. Revo will uninstall the program, look for leftover files that you can delete, and look in the registry for leftover, unneeded items that can be removed.
