Getting a book published is not an easy thing to do. First, I have been writing my ideas since high school. During college, while earning a degree in Media Communications, I wrote some short interactive stories. For anyone who doesn't know what that is, an interactive story is one where there are multiple endings and paths the main character can follow.
I finally finished a full-length interactive story and found a publisher. Last November was the release of my novel, "Ariona: The Bounty Hunter" and although I know that it will take awhile to gain readership, I feel great at my accomplishment.
I do have some advice for first time authors trying to get published. The first step is to write a book. If you write fiction, then narrow it down to a genre: sci-fi, fantasy, horror, western, romance, etc.
Second, write the complete first draft, full-length. Then edit it, double check it, have a couple of trustworthy friends read it over, and correct any issues.
Third, you do not need an agent right away. Some publishing companies require an agent, some do not. Research the market, and check each company's policies before sending them anything. Some publishers will want just the name and a brief outline of your novel, to see if they are interested. Others will ask for three chapters to base their decision off of. If a publisher wishes to see your whole novel, send it to them.
With any luck, the publisher may offer you a contract and publish your book. Even if it is a small publishing company, from then on you can tell other publishers the name of your first book and that will give you some credibility.
Good Luck, best wishes.

OH! That's a GREAT success story and great advice! Not what I expected here, but the "hook-up" of a publisher and author is probably just as rewarding as finding a mate here
(now you'll have time to DATE! )

There are two ways you can go: Hook up with a publisher, or self-publish.
I have 4 books, which I have self-published.
If you self-publish, then you need to be good at marketing, which most authors are not.
If you hook up with a publisher, get used to the idea that they usually get about 90%, while you get 10%.
In the end, it's about marketing.
Good luck.

I think it is a great success, and I applaud the thread....WAY TO GO!!!!! This site is all about getting to know about each other, and this is a major part of NiceGuy's character, and life.......so of course it is appropriate!
writing is something I enjoy doing myself, from time to time, and this story just might give me the courage to publish too!!
Do publishers really take that much??? Grrrrr....

I have written a lot, but don't think I will ever get published. I thought about self-publish, but even that takes a lot of work, and money. So I just put them in blogs.

Like anything else you need money to be a published author. I have seen no talents with lots of money publish their own books and they consider themselves good when the reality of it as they finacnced their own work.
crazy.
